1 Thing NOT To Do When Starting A Business

I have two very unique opportunities I’m working on right now.  I’m back at working through start-up again.  After being a full time entrepreneur for 62 months now, I’ve forgotten how scary start-up is.  Right this second I’m sitting in Starbucks, scheming & planning.

Every time I’ve started a company, I go through a few phases.

  1. The Dream
  2. The Doubt
  3. The Deliverance

I’ve moved from Dream phase to Doubt phase.  I’m just doubting my ideas.  I’m second guessing my gut instinct.  I’m reading too many books & listening to too many people.  The doubting phase is where a lot of dreams die.  

Before we get it off the ground, we doubt it to death.

  • What if they don’t show up?
  • What if we go broke?
  • What if I have the wrong product?
  • What if I’m wrong?
  • What if __________________ (fill in the blank)?

The 1 thing NOT to do when starting up anything is OVER-think it. 

The structure people will say that you need more systems. The planning people will say that you need more plans.  The lawyer will say that you need more paper work.  The data person will say that you need more data.

The real entrepreneur will tell you to make a freaking mess! 

So, that’s what I’m doing.  I’m done planning & I’m about to start doing.  It’s going to be messy & it will not work right, but who cares.  There is only 1 thing needed when you start a new company – customers.

Start selling something to somebody.

Sure, you will screw stuff up.  You will get fired by a few people because you didn’t do it just right the first time.  Your systems will mess up.  All of this is part of it.
